Eminem TRIUMPHs AT THE 2002 MTV EUROPE MUSIC AWARDS. Kylie Minogue, Red Hot Chili Peppers and Linkin Park secure two awards each
Barcelona, 14 November 2002: Eminem triumphed at the 9th annual MTV Europe Music Awards, broadcast tonight from Palau Sant Jordi, Barcelona, to a global TV audience in excess of one billion people. The US rap star won in three separate categories: Best Male, Best Hip Hop and Best Album for ‘The Eminem Show’. Following closely behind with two awards each were Kylie Minogue – with awards for Best Pop and Best Dance; Red Hot Chili Peppers, who won in the Best Rock and Best Live Act categories; and Linkin Park, who won in the Best Group and Best Hard Rock categories.
The glittering ceremony, often described as the music ‘Oscars’, featured 26 separate awards — including 10 regional awards — reflecting MTV’s growing network of regional music channels, and celebrating the diversity of European music taste. The show also featured stunning live performances from across the international music spectrum, including appearances by Robbie Williams, Moby, Whitney Houston, Christina Aguilera, Pink, Bon Jovi, Enrique Iglesias, Eminem, Royksopp, Coldplay, Wyclef Jean and Foo Fighters.

Highlights of the 2001 MTV Europe Music Awards included Sean ‘P. Diddy’ Combs’ dramatic entrance at the start of the show, a medley of Pink’s hits, Whitney Houston performing ‘Whatchulookinat’ and Eminem performing a dramatic version of ‘Lose Yourself’ and ‘Cleaning Out My Closet’.
The 2002 MTV Europe “Free Your Mind” Award was presented FARE — Football Against Racism in Europe — a pan-European action group fighting racial prejudice at all levels of the sport.
The 2002 MTV Europe Music Awards was hosted by pioneering producer, rapper and pop phenomenon Sean ‘P. Diddy’ Combs.
